Below is a list of apps we have tested for compatibility with the GPS Navigation and Battery Cradle.
(Note: the date on this blog will always show the original post date of 12/09, but I do keep constantly updating the list of compatible apps. – GL)
First, some simple but necessary disclaimers:
- What kind of test did we do? We downloaded the app, installed it on an iPod touch with the GPS Cradle attached, and looked to see if the app could display a position & generally do what it was supposed to with that location information. We did not test every feature of every app. We did, however, make notes where things did not operate as smoothly as your might expect.
- What do we mean by “compatible”? If the app can successfully display your location and the major features of the app work as a result (e.g. show your location on a topographic map, give you navigation directions, display businesses around your position, etc.), we say the app is compatible. PLEASE NOTE: we will say an app is compatible even if it requires a WiFi connection in order to provide useful information about stuff around your position. Be sure to read the comments – some apps need both GPS location and a WiFi connection in order to perform at their best (or just be useful).
- Are these the only compatible apps? No! Don’t assume an app is incompatible just because you don’t see it listed here. We have yet to actually come across an incompatible app. The iTunes store has 140+ pages of apps in the Navigation category alone: realistically, we will only be able to test a fraction of the available apps. If you have a question about a particular app, or you would like to have your app tested, please drop us a note.
Apps Tested with the GPS Navigation & Battery Cradle
AirVue Golf (V2.5): Compatible
Here’s a great app for turning your touch into a rangefinder on the golf course. This app is one of the few which allows you to download the course information and store it in the device. Thousands of courses in the database too – just be sure to download the course information before hitting the tee. If your local course isn’t already in the database, drop ‘em a note – they can add a new course in about 24 hours! More info at the AirVue website.
B.iCycle (V2.5): Compatible
BikeMateGPS (V3.1): Compatible
This is an awesome app for cycling: a very cool UI, lots of data viewing/review options, route & mapping options, and ways to upload ride routes. The map will require a WiFi connection, but it does seem to do some map caching. However, if you don’t have WiFi, it will still save your route and allow you to view it on a map once you’re back in a WiFi hotspot. (See here for some bicycle mounting options for the GPS Cradle.)
Birdseye (V1.3): Compatible
Birdwatching just went high tech… Before you head out, you will need WiFi to: (i) set your desired location and (ii) update the sightings for your location. The app will cache the map data if you go into the various menu options (“Find Nearby”, “Notable Sightings…”, etc.) and select the map view option: viewing the map causes the map data to be saved. I did notice a little peculiar behavior when you’re not in range of WiFi, however: in order to get the cached map data to display properly, select the map view of the “Find Nearby” option first. After doing that, the maps would show properly in other modes too.
CoPilot (V8.2.0.264): Compatible
The Live services won’t be useful (due to the lack of a network connection), but you can still navigate.
CycleMeter (V4.1): Compatible
Another good cycle computer app with route recording capability. As you would expect, you will need to have a WiFi connection to view your route on the map. (See here for some bicycle mounting options for the GPS Cradle.)
Executive Caddie (V3.1): Compatible
foursquare (V2.0.1): Compatible
Fugawi iMap (V3.2.00): Compatible
If you’re a boater and use digital marine charts, the Fugawi name may already be familiar to you. These are the guys behind the maritime map library at X-Traverse.com. (Need a chart of any place covered by water? It’s available at X-Traverse.) But iMap is for the landlubbers in the crowd: iMap is a simple and easy-to-use topographic map app with free maps for the US & Canada. (There’s a version for Sweden too.) iMap particularly shines when it comes to waypoints: once you’ve marked routes, you can upload your waypoints in GPL/KML/KMZ format to x-traverse.com for distributing to other devices, and even share them to Facebook. (The iPhone version of the app even allows you to take pics and associate them with waypoints too.) More info over on Fugawi’s website.
Gaia GPS (V3.4): Compatible
The app correctly displays your location on a topographic map, and lets you mark waypoints as you travel, but be sure to download the maps (at all the zoom levels) via WiFi before heading out….unless you want your afternoon to turn into Man vs. Wild. The GaiaGPS website is here.
Geocaching (V4.1.2): Compatible
iPod touch + GPS Cradle + Geocaching = everything you need.
Geosphere (V2.3.1): Compatible
GolfCard Pro (V2.1.0): Compatible
Gowalla (V2.2.2): Compatible
Find yourself a WiFi hotspot & check in.
GPS Kit (V3.5): Compatible
iMapMyRide (V3.6): Compatible
iMapMyRun (V3.6): Compatible
iWant (V2.1): Compatible
You’ll need to be in a WiFi hotspot for this one.
iNavX (V3.1.6): Compatible
Many people are inquiring about compatibility with boat navigation apps, and have asked specifically about iNavX: it works just fine with the GPS Cradle. All of the instrument data is reported, and your location is plotted on the maps as you would expect. Speaking of maps, the only body of water not available to you via iNavX is your bathtub. The map coverage is simply huge. You will need to download the map data over WiFi first, but the maps stay resident on the touch. The iNavX site is here.
iWant(V1.2): Compatible
The app correctly identifies your location, but it will need a WiFi connection to download relevant data.
Magellan Roadmate 2010 USA (V1.2.1): Compatible
Maps (the app that comes preinstalled): Compatible
The app correctly displays your location, but it will need a WiFi connection to download map data.
MapQuest 4 Mobile (V1.2.1.12): Compatible
The app correctly displays your location, but it will need a WiFi connection to download map data.
Memory-map (V1.3.5): Compatible
MyTown (V2.0.1): Compatible
You’ll need a WiFi hotspot to use this app, but remember that the location accuracy from the GPS Cradle translates to greater points.
MotionX GPS (V12.6): Compatible
IIRC, MotionX GPS has been in the top 10 navigation apps on the iTunes store since it was released. I think that speaks for itself.
Navigon MobileNavigator North America (V1.6): Compatible
Navigon MobileNavigator Europe (V1.6): Compatible
Offline Topo Maps (V1.1): Compatible
RouteBuddy Atlas (V1.4.4): Compatible
Atlas is a GPS tracker app with support for 3 different kinds of maps: topo maps, street maps and marine maps. Don’t forget to download the maps (at all of the zoom levels you need) over WiFi first.
RTA Lite (V1.4): Compatible
RunKeeper Pro (V2.3.2.0): Compatible
TomTom US & Canada (V1.4.1): Compatible
Previous versions of the TomTom apps would continuously display a “Connect to GPS” message at the top of the screen. Despite this, the app will pick up GPS information from the GPS Cradle and provide valid directions.
TomTom Eastern Europe (V1.4.1): Compatible
Topo Maps (V1.9.1): Compatible
This is one of those apps that focuses on one thing and does it very well. If you live in the US or Canada & you’re into hiking, you owe it to yourself to check out this app: TopoMapsApp.com. If the app is opened while the GPS Cradle is still searching for your location, Topo Maps may repeatedly report an error that the location cannot be found. Be patient. Once the GPS Cradle has determined its location, Topo Maps works fine.
Walt Disney World Animal Kingdom Mini Guide (V1.51): Compatible
Where (V3.5.4): Compatible
The app correctly identifies your location, but it will need a WiFi connection to download relevant data.
Yelp (V4.4.2): Compatible
The world is your oyster (once you find a WiFi hotspot…).

This is very helpfull thank you.
Great info. I'm curious to see weather it will work with mobile google earth
Add MotionX-GPS Lite 9.4 and MotionX-GPS 10.0 to the list of compatible applications.
I've used the cradle with "iMapMyRun" and it seems fine. I was able to save tracks of a 2 mile run, and look at a map of my location during the run. Once back in wi-fi range, I could upload the details I was able to obtain via the Dual cradle.
Yes, just tried Google Earth and with the cradle and it works fantastic!
Geosphere just updated their app to give compass functionality if (when!) using an external GPS.
does anyone know if the cradle works with iMapMyRun or RunKeeper
I'm a boater in the Great Lakes and would like to download the app. "Navionics Marine_Great Lakes" is this compatible or has anyone tried this with the gps cradle?
when I start the tom tom app the screen switches from black and white and on the top menu bar it reads "connect gps" and the routing instructions or road I'm traveling on. All the other nav apps seem to work
Any thoughts??
Stig
Stig: Something changed in the TomTom app when it went from V1.2 to V1.3. Since TomTom sells their own car kit, I presume the change was related to an optimization of the software for their car kit.
I just got the gps cradle today June 26th and NO GPS apps work. any ideas? GPS is on…fully charged.
Tomtom 1.4 (iOS 4) West Europe is compatible?
Works great with Navigon
What about the copilot navigation software?
It is so cheap i suggest bundling it when selling to european costumers that have no use for the american map!
does it work with Galileo Offline Maps? thanks
Yes – it should.
